ALDI Portugal selects EDP for the largest public eMobility partnership

ALDI Portugal has chosen EDP to install and operate more than 650 rapid charging points at its stores in mainland Portugal.

This is the largest electric mobility partnership ever carried out in the country and also the largest secured by EDP in the Iberian Peninsula.

This partnership includes the installation of charging points in more than 140 existing stores with parking facilities, as well as in new ALDI stores that will open over the course of this year and the next.

EDP Comercial will also begin to operate the chargers that are already installed in 34 of these stores.

In total, the partnership encompasses over 650 charging points in the public MOBI.E network, which can be used by any driver with any Electric Mobility Service Provider (CEME) card.

The power of the rapid charging equipment to be installed in the store car parks will range from 60 to 120 kilowatts.

This will allow ALDI customers to choose the speed at which they wish to recharge their vehicle while they do their shopping.

With this partnership, EDP and ALDI promote the decarbonisation and reduction of their customers’ environmental footprint, contributing to the supermarket chain’s ambitious sustainability goals.

The sustainability work of the ALDI Nord Group, to which ALDI Portugal belongs, is based on four main areas—climate protection, responsible and sustainable supply chains, more environmentally friendly packaging, and combating food waste.

Specifically, regarding climate protection, the retailer aims to achieve a 55% reduction in emissions across the entire Group (ALDI Nord) by 2030.

As one of the leading companies in electric mobility investment in Portugal, EDP Comercial has sought to expand its public charging infrastructure in convenient locations that provide the best charging experience, as well as the appropriate power for the available charging time for electric vehicle users, through partnerships with companies present in consumers’ daily lives.

This is why it is important for these partners, like ALDI, to have a distributed presence across the country to ensure a network from North to South Portugal.

“The creation of a robust infrastructure of charging points is crucial to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility. Therefore, at EDP, we are very pleased to celebrate this long-term partnership with ALDI Portugal, the largest electric mobility partnership ever carried out in the country, to provide consumers with the convenience of charging their vehicles while they shop, in any region of the country,” highlights Carlos Moreira, administrator of EDP Comercial.

“Together, we are paving the way for decarbonisation, offering our customers an increasingly sustainable in-store experience while raising awareness and promoting the use of electric vehicles in the country,” states João Braz Teixeira, Managing Director of Expansion & Real Estate at ALDI Portugal.

These new charging points add to the more than 3,300 that EDP Comercial already has in operation or implementation in Portugal, across more than 195 municipalities in all districts of the country.

With this constant growth in the number of available charging points, the number of charge sessions on EDP’s public network continues to break records.

Since EDP began investing in the development of electric mobility in Portugal, more than two million charging sessions have been completed at the company’s points connected to the public network.

These charges have enabled more than 200 million kilometres to be travelled solely using electricity and have prevented the emission of over 20,000 tonnes of CO2 that would have been produced by combustion vehicles.
