EBS, the operator of MeerPlus public transport in Zaanstreek-Waterland, officially opened the largest and most advanced Zero Emission bus parking facility in the Netherlands.

The Purmerend parking boasts 128 charging points and 7,000 m2 of solar panels, enabling emission-free operations in the region.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures including Gerard Slegers (Board Member of the Amsterdam Transport Region), Coen Lageveen (Councillor of Purmerend), Wilko Mol (CEO of EBS), and Kaj Mook (Concessions Manager at EBS).

Their presence underscored the significance of this development for sustainable transport in the region.

Spanning over 38,000 m2, the facility features 128 charging points for MeerPlus electric buses, alongside a workshop and an eco-friendly washing area.

Notably, an innovative zeolite-based system ensures 80 per cent of wash water is reused, while more than 2,000 solar panels on the roof generate part of the energy required for charging stations.

Excess energy is stored in two large batteries with a combined capacity of 2.15 megawatt-hour (MWh).

Kaj Mook emphasized the advanced energy management system, stating: “Our system ensures green energy is automatically supplied to buses when needed, while intelligent battery storage minimizes waste.”

With the solar panels alone, EBS saves approximately 360,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually.

Wilko Mol highlighted EBS’s commitment to people and the environment, stating: “We’ve implemented innovative solutions in Purmerend and Zaandam, but ultimately, it’s about the impact. Sustainable electric buses create a better living environment for everyone in the Zaan and Waterland region.”
