Following the drop in EV registrations Mobility Sweden calls for government incentives

According to data from Mobility Sweden, registrations of electric cars in 2024 fell by 15.9% compared to the previous year, decreasing from 112,179 to 94,333 units. What is needed to boost sales?

According to data from Mobility Sweden, registrations of electric cars in 2024 fell by 15.9% compared to the previous year, decreasing from 112,179 to 94,333 units.

However, electric cars were the most successful across all propulsion types.

While registrations dropped nearly 16%, the market share of electric cars only decreased from 38.7% to 35.0%.

This is because 2024 was generally a weaker year for the Swedish car market, with just 269,582 new vehicles registered across all propulsion types, representing a 7% decline.

Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, saw a 3.4% increase, amounting to 63,113 units and capturing a 23.4% market share. This means that 58.4% of all newly registered cars in Sweden last year featured a charging connection.

“2024 was the year when the growth of electric cars stalled, while the number of plug-in hybrids increased,” explains Mobility Sweden.

“The decline in electric car registrations reversed the trend of reducing emissions from new cars, with average emissions increasing by about three grams of carbon dioxide during the year,” they added.

To ensure electric car growth resumes in 2025, Mobility Sweden is calling for government incentives.

“For heavy transport electrification to gain momentum, it is necessary to reduce the electricity tax for vehicle charging and encourage greater demand for transport solutions that do not use fossil fuels,” comments Mattias Bergman, CEO of Mobility Sweden.

He continues, “Now that the economic situation is improving for many households and businesses, the government has a unique opportunity to introduce new effective policy instruments to accelerate electrification and reduce emissions from new vehicles once again.”

Registrations by Propulsion Type

Over the year, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remained the leading propulsion type, accounting for 35% of new registrations.

The second most significant propulsion type was plug-in hybrids, with a market share of 23.4%.

Close behind were petrol-powered vehicles at 22.5%.

Other hybrids held a market share of 10.2%, while pure diesel vehicles accounted for 7.0%.

Ethanol combustion engines represented 1.5%, and gas-powered engines accounted for 0.4%.

Other vehicles accounted for only 46 new registrations throughout the year, resulting in a market share of 0.0%.

Which Were Sweden’s Best-Selling Models?

Tesla’s Model Y ranked first with 18,293 new registrations last year, ahead of the Volvo XC60 with 14,992 units.

In the pure electric vehicle category, another Volvo model followed, albeit with a larger gap: the EX30 achieved 7,100 new registrations in its first full year of sales, followed by the EX40 with 6,165 units and the VW ID.4 with 4,989 units.
