In December 2023, France reached the milestone of one million registrations of electric vehicles, as explained in a study presented by Avere-France.

Last month, electrified cars achieved notable numbers with a total of 57,499 units registered in the national territory, representing a 26.5 per cent market share in the automotive industry.

Moreover, these numbers reflect a 35.4 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2022.

“Of the 1,594,841 electric and plug-in hybrid light vehicles in circulation in France, 491,866 were registered in 2023,” says Clément Melizon, General Delegate of Avere-France.

What are the most chosen electrified models?

During the last month of 2023, foreign models dominated.

The vehicle leading the way is the American Tesla Model 3, with 4,790 registrations.

It is available in two versions in the market, distinguished by the motor power, both with a range exceeding 500 kilometers.

In the second position, with 172 units less, is the Tesla Model Y with 4,618 registrations.

Completing the podium is the MG4 from the Chinese business group MG, with 4,138 sales in French territory.

The first domestic model appearing on this list is the Peugeot 208, which boasts a figure of 1,278 registered units.

However, these numbers show a four percent decrease compared to its registrations in December 2022.

It’s worth mentioning that when weighing the figures for plug-in hybrids, European-origin brands play a prominent role.

Peugeot 308

In the first position is the Peugeot 308 with 958 units sold in the twelfth month.

This model offers two editions with 180 and 225 HP, both with 413 kilometers of range, costing around 24,600 euros.

The second and third places are occupied by two models from the German Mercedes: the GLA with 953 registered cars and the GLC with 713.

Regarding utility vehicles, the national industry is making a strong impact.

While the first place is taken by the Ford Transit with 483 units delivered for a price of 48,811 euros in the French market, the models following it are both made by Peugeot.

The Peugeot 208 counted 405 units in the last month of 2023, and the Peugeot E-Partner 293.

In this regard, the utility electric vehicle sector reflects a 3.2% increase compared to the same month in 2022.

Tesla not only dominates in France

Throughout the various quarters of last year, the American brand saw its success reflected in global sales figures.

Tesla maintained the top position in EV sales throughout the year, selling a record-breaking 1.8 million units in 2023, a 38 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

It secured the first position in every quarter except the last one, where it was surpassed by BYD.

Whilst, on January 2, On Tuesday, Tesla said it delivered a record 484,500 electric vehicles in the last three months of the year.
