Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a groundbreaking announcement at the IAA Mobility 2023, unveiled a strategic move by the German government to enact legislation that would require fast chargers at gas stations across the nation.
This game-changing initiative aims to put an end to “range anxiety” and make electric vehicle (EV) charging ubiquitous.
The new mandate is projected to encompass approximately 80% of all gas stations in Germany, totaling around 11,000 facilities.
The government has set an ambitious target to install 1 million public charging points throughout Germany by the end of 2030, with only 10% of that goal achieved as of July 1, according to a survey by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW).
ADS-TEC Energy, a global leader in battery-buffered, ultra-fast charging technology, stands as the ideal solution to meet the government’s electrifying challenge.
The company’s innovative products, the ChargeBox and ChargePost, are poised to revolutionize the EV charging landscape at gas stations, especially in areas where grid upgrades for high-power charging capacities are impractical.
These solutions are designed to work with “normal” grid connections, minimizing space and noise while delivering ultra-fast charging at speeds of up to 320 kW.
The result is high-power charging, even in locations with low connection power, such as urban and rural areas. This development promises to enhance EV acceptance by making charging as fast as traditional refueling and bringing convenient fast-charging to drivers at the most accessible locations.
Thomas Speidel, CEO of ADS-TEC Energy, believes that “significantly more convenient” charging, in minutes rather than hours, coupled with availability at gas stations along popular routes through city centers, will be the catalyst to drive EV adoption into the mainstream.
ADS-TEC Energy’s products are well-suited for gas station integration
The compact design of the ChargeBox (1.6 m² footprint) allows for flexible installation within existing gas station setups.
With two charging points within a 100-meter radius, this system operates silently, even at maximum power, and can deliver 320 kW of charging at a single point.
The ChargePost combines high charging performance with power storage, taking up less than 2 m² of space.
Additionally, it features built-in advertising space through 75-inch UHD monitors, opening up revenue opportunities for gas station operators.
The bidirectional capabilities of the ChargePost allow for sector coupling between mobility and electricity, further advancing innovative business models.
ADS-TEC Energy’s solutions have already received positive feedback from customers and partners, including JOLT Energy, a fast-charging network operator, which has installed multiple ChargeBox charging stations at gas stations in major German cities.
Maurice Neligan, CEO of JOLT Energy, highlights the value of providing a reliable and space-saving solution for fast charging needs, as well as the potential for gas station operators to benefit from additional revenue and new customers without having to invest in charging infrastructure themselves.
