After the 2,351 number plates registered during 2022, according to data collected by ANFIA, registrations of buses over eight ton hit the figure of 4,043 in 2023. The growth on 2022 is impressive: +72%.
366 e-buses have been registered in 2023, more than doubling the 2022’s figure of 108 units (+238%), according to Sustainable Bus.
26% of city buses registered during the year were electrically-powered.
Solaris leads with 115 vehicles (plus some 46 trolleybuses), BYD follows with 87 units, Karsan third with 43, closely followed by the 41 units featuring Rampini‘s logo.
Then 22 Iveco Bus E-Way, 19 Yutong E12, 14 BMC and 13 VDL.
Iveco Bus with 44% market share
Looking at the global over 8 ton bus market, the 4,043, more than half are intercity vehicles.
Iveco Bus excels with its Crossway – and Iveco Bus itself is the market leader in Italy with 1,782 registrations (and a staggering 44% market share).
Daimler Buses also did very well, since the combined Mercedes-Benz plus Setra figure (219 coaches of the former Kassbohrer) says 927 units.
Third step on the podium for MAN. Scania and Otokar also did well, while Industria Italiana Autobus, Solaris, Van Hool and Yutong lost share (but in most cases increased however their volumes).
While intercity vehicles number 2,144, Class I vehicles’ registrations were 1,374, a quarter of which are electrically powered.
Lastly, tourist coaches are also on the rise again (from 359 to 525, including 19 school buses), although they are still far from the heights to which they have accustomed us: after having reached their lowest figure since 1993 last year with just 359 coaches, they are now up to 525 (including 19 school buses).
