Large electric bus tenders Chile

Electromobility is a state policy in Chile, and under that premise, it is moving towards the goal of having 100 per cent electric public transport fleet by 2040.

Below, Mobility Portal Latinoamérica provides a list of the main electric bus tender processes in the country.

It is worth noting that Gabriel Boric, the current president, emphasized the importance of improving public transportation so that Chileans prefer it over private vehicles.

In turn, Chile’s Undersecretary of Transport, Jorge Daza, stated in an interview with Mobility Portal Group that “the goal by the end of Boric’s government is to convert 50 per cent of the Metropolitan Region’s fleet to electromobility.”

In this context, one of the main tenders highlighted this year belongs to the Red Movilidad, which will be implemented in the second half of 2025.

Santiago will tender 1,267 electric buses, thereby reaching a 50 per cent electric fleet.

The evaluation process, which lasted ten months, concluded with the incorporation of more than 1,000 electric buses that will operate from 23 terminals, of which three are currently electric and 20 will be converted to electric.

In public statements, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications stated that “the tender covers 121 routes, benefiting over 3.5 million people in 32 municipalities of the Metropolitan Region, such as La Granja, San Miguel, San Ramón, La Florida, and Pedro Aguirre Cerda, among others.”

The novelty is that, following the participation of several actors in the value chain, such as bus manufacturers and charging infrastructure providers, two new international operators are joining the system: one Spanish and one Mexican.

These are the Colombian company Inversiones Gran América and Consorcio Conecta, led by the national company Buses Hualpén and including the companies Avanza and ADO.

The concession period will be ten years, which may be reduced to seven years in the event of non-compliance with requirements or extended to 14 years if service quality indicators are met.

More electric bus tenders driving electromobility in Chile

In the case of Copiapó, eight companies have submitted bids to the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications for the upcoming tender that will modernize the public transport system.

Copiapó will become the first city in South America with 100 per cent of its fleet composed of electric buses, with the implementation of 12 routes featuring at least 121 electric buses.

The selected company will be notified in October.

It is expected that the contract will be awarded and signed before the end of 2024, while the start of operations is anticipated for the second half of 2025.

Meanwhile, Valparaíso will launch a tender to renew over 600 vehicles during this second half of the year.

Of these, 250 will be electric buses, while the rest will include less polluting technologies.

The state will cover one-third of the new system, with the installation of at least four terminals for charging 44 new electric buses.

According to public information, the companies BYD, Grupo Cabal, SKC, Vivipra, and Reborn will test eight buses of various sizes in the municipalities of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué, Concón, and Villa Alemana.
