BYD and Moove Cars, the largest Uber fleet partner worldwide and a strategic partner in Spain, have announced a strategic agreement to accelerate the electrification of the Spanish company by integrating BYD’s electric vehicles (EVs) into its fleet.

The agreement is part of the global partnership between Uber and BYD, announced in late July, which aims to integrate 100,000 EVs from the Chinese manufacturer into the American platform in the main countries where it operates.

Spain, which in recent years has become one of Uber’s priority markets worldwide, is one of the first European countries where the agreement between both entities is being implemented locally.

In this first phase of the agreement, 200 units of the SEAL, BYD’s fully electric D-segment saloon, will be added to Moove Cars’ fleet and will operate via the Uber platform in Madrid.

For the American company, this alliance marks a key milestone in its sustainability commitment, aiming for half of the kilometres travelled on its platform across seven European capitals, including Madrid, to be in zero-emission vehicles by 2025.

“We are proud to see this collaboration come to fruition in Spain through this agreement between BYD and Moove Cars, reaffirming our commitment to supporting the drivers and fleets working with our platform in their transition to electric vehicles,” says Felipe Fernández-Aramburu, General Manager of Uber in Spain and Portugal.

“As a company dedicated to passenger transport, one of our challenges is to be a sustainable business, and with BYD’s help, we can make that possible,” states Manuel Puga, CEO of Moove Cars.

“The three companies share a commitment to decarbonising mobility in Spain. The integration of our fully electric vehicles into Moove’s fleet not only underscores this commitment but also reinforces our goal to contribute decisively to the widespread adoption of electric mobility in Spain, particularly in the electrification of private hire transport,” indicates Iñigo Trasmonte, Head of Marketing and Communication at BYD Spain.

On the Road to Zero Emissions

The agreement with BYD is a key element in Uber’s commitment to becoming a zero-emission mobility platform by 2030 in Europe and the United States (US), and by 2040 globally.

In Madrid, the Uber Green fleet, its EV service, has quadrupled in size, and the company expects to have more than a million electric cars operating through its app by the end of 2025.

Globally, the number of electric vehicles on the platform has tripled since last year, with over 180,000 drivers now using these vehicles to complete their trips on Uber.

Additionally, in May this year, the company launched UberX Share, its shared rides service.

The offering aims to provide more affordable journeys while enabling more people to be transported in fewer vehicles, helping to reduce emissions and improve traffic congestion.

For its part, BYD is globally committed to providing safe and attractive mobility solutions that reduce carbon emission pollution and address the challenges of climate change and global warming.

BYD also became the first original equipment manufacturer in the world to announce that it would stop producing internal combustion engine vehicles that year to focus on new energy vehicles.

Moove Cars, as a key player in passenger transport across urban and interurban areas in various European cities, has set a short-term goal to transition its entire fleet to a 100% emissions-free model.

Each year, it commits to upgrading part of its hybrid vehicles, with ECO and Zero badges, to electric models.
