Electric vehicles are experiencing a remarkable surge in new registrations of commercial vehicles in the European Union (EU).
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the numbers show a significant shift in the industry during the first three quarters of 2023.
Vans
In this segment, diesel vehicles still maintain a strong presence, representing 83% of the market.
Nevertheless, alternative energy sources are gaining ground.
Electric vans have doubled their market share, reaching 7.3% and experiencing an impressive growth of 91.4%.
This advancement has been primarily driven by markets such as France (+102.2%) and the Netherlands (+136.8%).
Despite this growth, gasoline and diesel still account for 89% of the market in this segment.
Trucks
In the realm of trucks, diesel remains the leader, representing 95.5% of new registrations.
However, electric trucks have experienced a spectacular growth, increasing by 321.7%.
Germany (+297.9%) and the Netherlands (+1,463.6%) lead this trend, contributing to the significant rise of electric trucks, now representing 1.5% of the market.
This marks a significant shift from the 0.4% of the previous year.
Buses
Electrically rechargeable buses are gaining ground in the commercial bus market.
During the first three quarters of 2023, there was a 31.5% increase in new registrations of electric buses in the EU, reaching a market share of 14.4%.
Spain, with a remarkable growth of 246.2%, leads this trend, followed by France (+35.8%) and Germany (+26.9%).
Hybrid-electric buses also experienced significant growth, more than doubling their market share compared to 2022, representing 12.8% of the market.
These data reflect a significant shift toward electric commercial vehicles in the EU, driven by growing awareness of the importance of sustainability and the adoption of cleaner technologies in commercial transportation.
The trend toward electric vehicles seems unstoppable and promises a cleaner and more sustainable future in the commercial vehicle sector in Europe.
