How payment companies are positioning in the eMobility sector following AFIR implementation?

Despite entering the eMobility sector a year and a half ago, PAX has already earned the trust of key industry players. Below, the payment device manufacturer outlines the main challenges they face.
How Payment Companies Are Positioning in the eMobility Sector Following AFIR Implementation

The European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), in force since April 2024, sets new standards to boost the installation of chargers on roads.

Its focus on interoperability and price transparency at charging points has motivated a new player to position itself in the electromobility sector: payment companies.

In this context, PAX Technology, a leading company in the manufacture of transaction terminals, has been operating in this industry for a year and a half.

Antonio Soria, Business Development Manager de PAX Technology.

In dialogue with Mobility Portal EspañaAntonio Soria, Business Development Manager of the firm, says:

“Although we are not directly involved in the electric mobility sector, our focus is on providing solutions that comply with standard banking payment regulations, as required by AFIR.”

Under the current regulations, new stations must incorporate terminals that allow users to make transactions with cards or contactless devices.

This represents an evolution in the way drivers pay to refuel their vehicles, similar to how they do so at stores or gas stations.

What is the main challenge PAX faces?

The lack of experience in eMobility.

“This is a new sector for us, and we are learning as we go,” explains Soria.

He adds: “Although we share certain similarities with the traditional payment industry, integration into charging stations is different, which forces us to adapt our products to fit into this ecosystem.”

This is why they have joined the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (AEDIVE).

Another important challenge highlighted by the company’s representative is the interoperability between charging systems and payment devices.

Although chargers can be designed to accept different types of transactions, the integration of PAX terminals into them can vary depending on the technical specifications of each one.

This aspect is essential to ensure that users can pay easily and quickly, as established by the AFIR.

“We are learning to integrate our devices effectively in a sector that is very focused on the end customer with certain limitations at the point of sale,” states Soria.

Who is PAX’s target customer

“All manufacturers of charging totems, as well as companies responsible for managing ‘refuelling’ services,” he says.

In this sense, PAX is already collaborating with some of the main companies in the sector, such as Iberdrola and Cepsa

What products does the company offer for the eMobility sector?

The company has a range of terminals, such as the IM15, IM25 and IM30 models, which allow easy integration into electric vehicle chargers.

Each of these devices has its own characteristics, but all comply with the safety and functionality standards required by European regulations.

PAX IM15.

These are capable of accepting contactless payments, via QR codes, magnetic stripes or Chip & PIN, offering a flexible and secure payment experience.

The IM15 stands out for its robustness, resistance to vandalism and adaptability in outdoor environments, key characteristics for use in charging stations on public roads

The IM25 is a compact, affordable, stand-alone system that integrates advanced technology including cameras and sensors, a crystal-clear anti-reflective display, advanced communications connectivity, and more.

Meanwhile, the IM30 is an interactive interface that can be integrated into all kiosks and vending machines, designed to increase sales, implement security and be immune to environmental damage.

It combines all the benefits of Android with the robustness of an unattended product, so you can generate new revenue streams in any self-service environment.

All PAX products are designed to provide long-term solutions, with the durability and adaptability required by an environment as dynamic as that of electric mobility.

The company offers first-class, cost-effective and premium quality products, having sold more than 80 million devices in over 120 countries.

It is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as PAX Global.
