Pod Point arrives in Spain to become “a leading charger provider”: What’s the strategy?

The company has installed over 250,000 charging points in the UK and aims to reach one million and beyond. To achieve this, it is expanding internationally, with Spain being its first destination. Government subsidies were crucial in making this decision. Here are the details.

Pod Point is a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging in the United Kingdom (UK), with its main business focused on developing products for homes and workplaces.

At the end of last year, the company chose Spain as the first destination for its international expansion.

“Our goal is to support the EV transition and become one of the leading providers of charging solutions in the country,” states Val Geary, who has worked at Pod Point for over six years and currently serves as VP for International.

It is worth mentioning that, to launch the Solo 3S home charger in Spain, Pod Point partnered with SeisSolar, a leader in the photovoltaic sector.

Now, aiming to achieve the same level of success as in the UK, the company is seeking to partner with car manufacturers.

“What helped drive our growth were the partnerships we established with BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as with some of the leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and leasing companies,” explains Geary.

He further reveals to Mobility Portal Europe: “We’d like to start developing this type of relationship abroad as well. That is the strategy for Spain.”

The reason the company seeks to establish these partnerships is that it is in the vehicle showroom where customers first learn about the concept of home charging.

What role do government subsidies play in Pod Point’s decision?

Pod Point aims to expand into other European markets, with countries like France and Portugal  being considered for how to bring its product to market

“This is one of the most exciting projects we’re working on, and we have exciting plans for next year as well,” Geary assures.

But why did they choose Spain as their first destination?

The main reason is the subsidies the country offers.

“Before entering this market, we evaluated how subsidies—like the Plan Moves III—make charging infrastructure more accessible for customers,” comments the VP for International.

That was the main reason we chose Spain first,” he confirms.

However, it’s worth mentioning that these subsidies have fallen, and there is a lack of foresight regarding their return.

This is why the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive) presented a letter to President Pedro Sánchez, requesting the retroactive reactivation of the Plan Moves III as “an urgent solution to the suffocating situation the sector is facing” and as an incentive for electric vehicles.

But this wasn’t the only reason Pod Point chose to launch in this country.

“We were looking for several things, one of which was scale,” says Geary.

Since Spain is the fourth largest passenger vehicle market in the European Union (EU), the country meets this requirement.

“We also wanted to enter a market with growth potential in the EV sector,” he explains.

It is worth noting that in January 2025, new vehicle registrations saw declines in the major markets of the bloc: France experienced a 6.2% drop, Italy a 5.8% decline, and Germany a 2.8% decrease.

Spain, on the other hand, recorded a 5.3% increase.

Moreover, regarding hybrid-electric vehicles, the country registered a growth of 23.5%.

Why choose Pod Point?

The Solo 3S EU is based on the version of the charger for the UK, but with modifications that make it more suitable for the Spanish market.

It is a device with a “modern and sleek design,” which requires minimal maintenance, according to the company.

In fact, it features a polycarbonate exterior designed to last, as it is fully prepared to withstand the high temperatures of hot climates.

It offers a power output of up to 7 kilowatts and is compatible with all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles available on the market.

Additionally, it includes solar integration, which allows customers to potentially charge their EVs for free at certain times if they have panels.

Pod Point assures that the Solo 3S is designed to be easy to install.

It comes with a specific app that assists installers during the startup and installation process, and provides expert technical support and live guidance.

It is also worth mentioning that over the years, the company has evolved its products to meet customer demands.

“Features such as charge scheduling, which allows users to charge when energy is cheaper, are one of the improvements we’ve implemented,” says Geary.

These improvements have led Pod Point to receive several awards.

One of the awards the company won was the What Car? Best Value Home EV Charger of the Year, due to its reliability and quality.

“We put all our 15 years of experience into developing a product that offers users all the features they need, in addition to being intuitive and easy to use,” he highlights.

Other awards they won, such as the Best of British Business from the Independent, are due to the levels of customer service they provide. The company’s Trustpilot score also demonstrates this, with an excellent rating and over 21,000 reviews.

“We work closely with our customers over time and constantly assess how to improve their experience,” says the VP for International.
