The German public transport operator Rheinbahn Düsseldorf is set to enhance its fleet with 10 Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses.

Rheinbahn plans to procure a total of 20 fuel cell units as part of its commitment to environmentally friendly transportation.

Solaris, the bus manufacturer, plans to deliver the vehicles to Düsseldorf in 2025 as part of the city’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2035.

The 12-metre hydrogen units will feature a 70 kilowatts Ballard hydrogen fuel cell, complemented by Solaris High Power batteries.

Equipped with a range of safety systems compliant with GSR2 requirements, these buses prioritize the safety of passengers and drivers.

Olivier Michard, Member of the Solaris Management Board for Sales and Marketing, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing partnership with Düsseldorf, dating back to 2005.

He said, “I am very pleased that our hydrogen buses will also serve the residents of Düsseldorf as part of its municipal public transport as soon as next year.”

Solaris has recently secured new orders from several German cities, including Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Duisburg, and Gross Gerau.

The total count of Solaris hydrogen-powered vehicles, either supplied or ordered, has now surpassed 700 units, according to the manufacturer.

Meanwhile, Rheinbahn Düsseldorf has been actively implementing its sustainable transport strategy by incorporating both battery-electric and hydrogen-powered units into its urban fleet.

In addition to the ten hydrogen buses, the city ordered 20 battery-electric buses from VDL in 2023.
